We finally got a weather window and headed out Monday about mid-day after one of my meetings. It had been so long since I’d been out in the boat that the port side battery was trained and wouldn’t take a charge from the onboard charger (I now believe it was corrosion build up). I want to give special thanks to Doug, Chris, and Kathy at East Coast Sports in Surf City for helping me out with a battery; they’re the best at East Coast.

Highlight Video for 2007 aboard the Reel Dream while fishing off the Topsail Island, North Carolina coast. A good year of fishing, even with about a 1/3 the time on the water was previous years...darn the weather and work. We still managed good catches of Grouper, King Mackerel, Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Flounder and more. 2007 brought the new adventures of striped bass fishing from Rudee Inlet in Virginia, Grouper fishing on spinning gear, and more unusual catches (ie: lot so moray eels, octopus, and giant lizardfish).

Tanner, Jason, and I left at the crack of dawn to catch our limit of Gray Trout just off of the beach before work this morning. We met at the ramp and took off down the waterway in my skiff. It was about as foggy as I have ever seen it, and somehow got worse as the morning wore on.

Most of the fishermen along South East Coast of North Carolina will agree that this has not been a good weather year for offshore boaters. I’ve only managed about 1/3 the normal hours on my boat compared to the last several years. Luckily the times I’ve managed to sneak out, the fishing’s been pretty good.

The winds have finally quit blowing from the Northeast, after about 3 ½ weeks, and I finally plan on going offshore again tomorrow in search of something tasty. With that in mind I figured I better send out a fishing report in order to get caught up to date with my reporting amid hopes of needing to write one for tomorrow’s fishing trip. This report will be short on text but long on pictures because I still need to get the boat ready for tomorrow’s trip along with some other afternoon projects and work.

It was my birthday so needless to say…I was going fishing offshore of Topsail Island and the North Carolina Coast. My birthday activity was decided well in advance this year because I have not maintained the frequency of fishing trips that I have in the past several years due to a number of factors including work, the course for my captain’s license, my overall schedule, and the unusual ability of the nasty side of mother nature to coincide with what little free time I’ve managed to find. This day the weather cooperated.

Well, I guess these reports are better late than never. My schedule has been unforgiving the last several months, but I’ve decided that it’s Friday evening and I’ll take a few moments to reflect on the very infrequent fishing I’ve managed to recently squeeze in. My spring fishing this year was plagued by my schedule, inopportune boat maintenance, taking the Course for my Captain’s license, nasty weather, business travel, my brother’s wedding, etc. Hopefully I’m back on course for some more regular fishing trips.
